Barend is molecular biologist by training, leading FAIR data specialist and corresponding author of the FAIR Principles paper. He is emeritus professor in biosemantics at the LUMC and the LACDR and is known for innovations in scholarly collaboration, especially nanopublications, knowledge graph-based discovery, and the FAIR data initiative. He is founding director of the Leiden Initiative for FAIR and Equitable Science (LIFES).
